The Conceit of Millennials

Self-Awareness Not a Problem at College - washingtonpost.com

While not really coming as much of a shock, it is noteworthy in how this research flies in the face of Howe & Strauss’s assertion that these kids were more altruistic than other generations. Meanwhile, Gen X’s Content of our Character Project has been collecting letters to the next generation that would hopefully appeal to their sense of social conscience.

EDIT: March 5, 10:45 AM — Howe & Strauss bite back. FWIW, I find that after a little while their relentless optimistic spin wears almost as thin as the generational bashing I find elsewhere. Truth usually lies somewhere in the middle.

  1. Hadn’t thought about CoOC in awhile. Great project. Let’s see, what would jennimi write? A couple things off the top anyway:

    -Learn to evaluate your sources.

-Get outside and notice the flora and fauna. Try leaving the cell phone behind.

-Take a few minutes to figure out how much $ you or your parents are spending on your education. When I realized I was spending $60 for every single hour of class time, not counting the interest on the school loans and other expenses, I never skipped a class again.

-In the immortal words of Flava Fave, “don’t believe the hype”. Maintain a healthy amount of skepticism about information.

  2. You know, this would make an excellent meme for us to start, Jenn — “What five things would you tell the next generation?” or something similar. You want to?

    * Education is a process, not an outcome. If you aren’t learning anything in college, odds are you are failing the system as much as it is failing you.

    * Other people cannot tell you who you are. Self-discovery can really only happen when you unplug from the world.

    * Do really you want your children to see those pictures of you doing body shots in Cabo? Because once they are out there, they are out there forever.

    * The only people who have ever been accused of being great are the ones who built original things, had original ideas.

    * Give something back every single day.

  3. yes!!…. only special people can get me meming. We should also think of a tag. “5ToTheNext”? What else? Also do I have permission to link back, and may I reprint my comments?

  4. “5tothenext” = awesome!

Yes, linkback. Yes, reprint. Yes to any/all.

I’ll do likewise a little later this afternoon and tag two or three other bloggers. Yip.

  5. You cannot enjoy the same lifestyle it took your parents 30 years to obtain without being a mooch. Try leaving the house once in a while. Your parents need a break from you. Be a grown up, or at least have the desire to try.
